Details/General Information:
|
The island of Bute lies off the west coast of Scotland, a 35 minute sailing from the minor port of Wemyss Bay situated at the mouth of the River Clyde on the A78 coastal road between Greenock and Largs. It is linked by both train and buses to Glasgow Airport, Prestwick Airport and Glasgow city. The ferries leave every 45 minutes until 8.0 p.m.
The island remains undeveloped by modern industrial, housing or tourist developments, most buildings are sandstone Victorian villas or ancient stone-built farms and inns. There are castles over a thousand years old, a 6th century chapel with Viking graves, prehistoric Standing Stones and petrified settlements.
Mount Stuart House is a grand historic house in the Gothic style, set in 200 acres of parkland, and open to the public.
The terrain varies from small fields of pasture to highlands, moor and forest. There are beaches only occupied by seals, and deep fresh water lochs teeming with pike, trout asnd perch.
Port Bannatyne is a small fishing village set around Kames bay with stone and slate houses dateing back 250 years. There is a yacht marina, two pubs, a village shop and Post Office, and The Russian Tavern which offers budget accommodation in four guest rooms and up-market meals of freshly landed seafood and fine Russian dishes. They pour local Real Ales direct from the barrels in the tavern, and have a selection of Russian beers, ciders, wines and vodkas. Reputedly in the top five restaurants in Scotland for quality
